HER Story In The Making: Cathy Hughes

We Salute Cathy Hughes, Founder and Chairperson of Urban One Inc. for our Women’s History Month Campaign, HER Story In The Making.


Cathy Hughes is an entrepreneur who founded the largest African-American owned and operated broadcast company in the nation Urban One Inc. formally known as Radio One.


Hughes’ Radio career began in her hometown of Omaha Nebraska at local radio station KUWH (AM). Cathy moved to Washington, DC to continue pursuing media where she attended The Howard University School of Communications.


Hughes’ became General Manager of Howard University Radio where she not only increased revenue but created the first radio format of its kind “The quiet storm” which was syndicated over 480 stations in the nation. This was just the beginning, Cathy continued to be a first in the media space.


She created fresh and original content and platforms for urban artist and consumers. Hughes success was not just in media but also In business. She was not only a successful radio host for over a decade but she was the first African-American woman to chair a publicly held company.


Cathy has created countless platforms for urban media, and has been the first woman of color in the media and radio business spaces over the decades.


Hughes’ work ethic and determination to succeed has directly impacted the entertainment world and the content available to the urban community and beyond.


She say’s “Not to let anyone convince you that your dream, your vision to be an entrepreneur is something that you shouldn't do. What often happens is that people who are well meaning, who really care for us are afraid for us and talk us out of it. It's interesting how God arranges your schedule.”
